Discovery Centre in Halifax

The first week after Christmas break seemed long for all of us. So, we all decided we needed a day of fun to help us make it through the coming week. Aunt Tiffany gave us a the great idea of heading into Halifax and going to the Discovery Centre. We got in touch with the Fields family and they were able to join us as well.

The Discovery Centre is a great place for kids of all ages, including all us "big kids". Seeing as it is winter just being an indoor event is a big plus. But besides that there are a lot of great exhibits that are informative and fun. One of the usual favorites was the Bubble Room.

This weekend is also the start of a year long international event, the International Year of Astronomy 2009. To help celebrate the event there were two special displays setup. There was an informational booth with information about the celebration and souvenirs such as trading cards and star finders. On the trading cards there is a serial number in which you are able to register online at www.astronomy2009.ca. When you register your name will be sent into space aboard the NEOSat in 2010. This satellite will be launched by the Canadian Space Agency to look for asteroids and other near Earth objects.

They also had setup a dome where you could climb in. It was completely dark inside, so some of the kids were not real happy about going in and did not stay for the full show. But they had a projector that they used to display the stars and other night sky objects on the roof of the dome. They pointed out a few constellations, Polaris the north star, and talked about other interesting astronomy related topics. It was quite neat.

Even though there are lots of things to do in the Annapolis Valley in the winter, it was nice to get away to something different and be able to do it with good friends and family.

Merry Christmas Everyone

Once again another year has gone by and it is Christmas time again. I've always truly enjoyed Christmas, even though at times I might act like Scrooge. The commercialization of Christmas and a lot of peoples attitudes really turn me off throughout the year. Obviously we all know that presents and the more, bigger, and better way of thinking are not what Christmas is about.

No matter what holiday it is you celebrate this time of year, what really makes them special is spending time with family and good friends. For the past few years, and for one more after this, I've been very fortunate in that I have a nice long break at Christmas from school. This gives me lots of time to be with my family and go visiting. It is also extra enjoyable because I have just finished exams which is a huge relief.

So from my family to yours we wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope that you are all as lucky as we are to be around your own family and friends.

Canadian Political Mess

Let me start by saying that by no means am I loyal to one political party in Canada. In fact, in the last three elections I have voted for three different parties.

This current situation, which our elected leaders are putting us in, is completely ridiculous and just causes me to feel more anger towards each party.

If governed properly I believe a minority government is the most ideal form of government to have, but unfortunately Mr. Harper does not know how to do this. For his whole time in power he has treated the government as if he has had a majority. The other parties knew they could not win an election and therefore refused to defeat him. As a result this allowed him to continue to govern this way. In a minority setting all parties should work together and compromise. In the end this should force them to agree on things which will be work for the majority of Canadians.

In no way am I endorsing the fact that the minority parties are trying to take power without being elected to do so, but Harper has not really left them much of an option.

I really don't know what the answer to this problem is. I know I don't want another election, as I don't feel any of the current leaders deserve to be in power. I don't want non elected parties to govern for us. And finally, I don't want to have Harper to continue running our Country as if we gave him a majority.

Maybe the best option would be for the would be coalition to force the Conservatives to meet a few demands and then not topple the government.
1. Remove Harper from his post.
2. Put a new leader in his place who will govern knowing they hold a minority.
3. Come up with a viable economic plan that isn't designed to mainly further their own parties interests instead of Canada's interests.

Having Some Autumn Fun

A lot of the time I have a hard time deciding what my favorite season is. Well winter is certainly out of the running but the other three all have their strong points.Spring means the end of winter, that in itself makes it a great season. But also things start getting so green, and everything is growing. The valley especially is a great place to see everything starting it's life cycle again. Summer, especially these last few years, means no classes. The weather is warm, we can go to the beach, run around in shorts and short sleeves. We usually take our big family vacation in the summer. It doesn't get dark till late at night.Ah Autumn, if I lived anywhere else other than the Valley I don't know if I would enjoy fall so much. But living here there are so many great and fun things to do. If you asked me today or over the weekend I would have to say that Autumn was my favorite.

This weekend was a great family weekend. Maybe I appreciate it so much because when planning it, I wasn't sure I would be able to go with the rest of the family because of the piles of school work that I had to complete. But after pulling a very late night, and then early morning, I was able to get a lot of it done and go out and enjoy. Saturday we met up with the Fields family and went and picked apples at Elderkins in Wolfville. We did this last year too the kids enjoy it so much, and really the grownups do as well. From their we went to Noggins Corner Farm and spent the afternoon letting the kids run around and have a good time.

Then we headed into the pumpkin patch to let the girls each pick out their own pumpkin. Caile and Ella found theirs very quickly, but Alex had to make sure she found just the right one. After everyone expended some energy and found their pumpkins, we took a wagon ride around their property. It goes out through their orchards and corn fields. It is very relaxing sitting back and taking in the beautiful fall scenery in the Valley.

Sunday we were out checking out the pumpkin people in Kentville. We made it around to a few displays. The kids love getting out and seeing all the creative designs. After that we made our way to Hennigars for an ice cream and a walk around the park.

Autumn in the Annapolis Valley is certainly one of my favorite times of the year. The one downfall it has though, is that it reminds me that winter is on it's way.

September Birthdays

The end of September is always a busy month for birthdays. Alex turned nine this year on September 27, and Caile turned four on the 30th. This year they both chose that they wanted to have their party at Roo's Playhouse in the Greenwood Mall. So for the first time we decided to throw just one party for them both, instead of two separate.

On Alex's actual birthday we had a family get together for her and Caile here at the house. Only two days before that we had one for Jens Dad as well. For each of these get togethers we had an Ice Cream cake from Dairy Queen. During the family get together we had Alex and Caile open their gifts from family. This made them happy and we didn't have to lug a bunch of presents to open to Roos. Ella got a little jealous watching them open presents and there not being any for her.

Then on the 28th we had their party with friends at Roos. It is a great spot for a mixed party because there are really things for children of all ages to do. At one point we divided between older and younger kids, the younger stayed out an played on the equipment and with the toys, while the older kids (myself included) went and played lazer tag. I was quite impressed with the setup they had. It has two levels you can go between and lots of ways you can go to hide or avoid getting hit. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Alex was a little nervous to go in at first but she had a blast. She is also proud to have shot daddy.

For a cake at the Roo's party we did something a little different. From SuperStore we ordered a cupcake Barbie Ballerina cake. It was 24 cupcakes iced as one big cake. This made it fairly easy, each kid could just have their own cupcake.

Ella was pretty good while Alex and Caile were opening their gifts at this party, but still a little jealous. But then on Cailes actual birthday, the 30th, Mom was taking them both out to pick out their own gifts. We knew this was probably going to get to be enough for Ella so she stayed home with Jen and I while they went shopping, and we put her to bed before they arrived home. The next morning was pretty good for her because while shopping Caile, ever so nice and sweet, asked Grammie Sue, "What about Ella, can we get her something?". Mom couldn't resist and let them pick out a baby doll for Ella to have. Then a couple days after that some cards arrived in the mail.

All in all, it made for a pretty busy few days bu everyone had a good time. And the friends party, which we thought could end up being pretty hectic and chaotic was the complete opposite. Everyone was well behaved and everything ran very smoothly.

Tonsils, Dancing and Computer Troubles

Now there is a blog title you don't see everyday, but that has been our last week or so.

Finally, on September 9th Alex went in and had her tonsils removed. She did a great job, was very brave, and is recovering very well. She was into the hospital for 7:30 in the morning, into surgery around 9:30, and out right around 10:00. The night was a little hectic as she got sick a couple of times, and there was a chance that she might have to stay more than the typical one night in hospital. But she didn't want to spend another night in there, so she made a deal that if she ate two things and kept them down she could come home. Alex kept down the food and was able to come home before lunch time on the 10th. She is now in her two week recovery period, where she had to remain home from school. She's pretty happy that she gets to eat all the ice cream she wants, but at the same time sad that her two weeks off didn't get her out of homework. The whole experience, even though it was hectic working around many peoples busy schedules, was pretty positive. All the Doctors, Nurses, and other staff at the hospital were very good. However, it still is very strange to me that Annapolis Valley Health will not do a surgery, that is typically done on children, during the summer when they wouldn't miss school.

Last night we headed into Berwick to pick up a pair of dancing shoes for Miss Caile Beth. She was very excited getting to go in and pick them out and see the dance studio she would be dancing in. She certainly proved she is her Mothers daughter, as the first thing she did when she walked onto the dance floor was go look at herself in the mirror and play with her hair. This morning she woke up, and after getting ready in her cute little dance outfit, went to her first dance lesson. Parents aren't really allowed to stay during the lesson but Jen peeked in right at the beginning and there was Caile, right in with the other kids holding hands and doing exactly what she was instructed to do. After the lesson is over the parents are able to come back and watch a little show that demonstrates some of what the kids learned during the day. Caile performed very well to a little jack-in-the-box song.

Now onto the computer troubles. It is not very often that you get to hear about good service so I thought it would be nice to share a very positive experience. The night I was at the hospital with Alex I had tried watching a movie on my laptop while she was having a nap. A short way into the movie the laptop froze and I had to manually power it off. When it came back up, before it even tried to boot into Windows, all that was seen were funky colored vertical lines going across the screen. Not very impressed especially seeing as I had not done a back up in a while. But eventually it came back, so I was quite sure it had something to do with overheating. Later that night, once I was home, I was working away and it froze up again. Same symptoms except this time it told me it could not detect my hard drive. An instant wave of stress poured over me and I even felt a little sick to my stomach. One of the suggestions that came on screen when it said it couldn't find the hard drive was to pull it out and put it back in. I tried this, and luckily enough it worked. I was still quite sure it was a heat problem, but just to be sure before I went to bed I setup a virus and spyware scan.

When I checked in the morning it was frozen again and would only boot to my now dreaded vertical lines. Fed up, and sure it was not a software problem, I called Dell. They answered right away and the gentleman I talked to was very kind and helpful. Over the phone he had me do a few diagnostic checks and determined in his mind that it was the motherboard. He setup a dispatch to have someone come out to my home and fix it. Wanting a little more insight I went into to talk to my friends in the hardware support office at Acadia. I was told there that Dell had recently sent out a memo about the video cards in some laptops overheating so much that they were melting the solider joints. This made sense to me as I had been watching movies and other video intensive things when the computer froze. I did a little research on the issue and as it turns out it was due to some faulty chips that NVIDIA (The video chipset manufacturer) had put out even though there is speculation that they knew about the faults. So this affected more than just my Dell laptop. So far both Dell and HP for sure have issued statements about the problem.

The next morning I was very pleasantly surprised to receive a phone call before school saying that a Dell contractor would be out to that morning to fix my laptop. Now that is service. The very next day I had a new motherboard installed in my laptop and it has been working great ever since. Many people say horrible things about Dell's support and computers in general, but I must say that I have been nothing but happy with both their computers, and now their support. Now I'll admit that this was my only encounter with Dell's support, but that in itself is saying something, because I have owned Dell's for a number of years now. Started out with a Dell desktop computer which I bought sometime in 2003, and it is still going strong as a computer for the kids. My first two years at Acadia I have used a Dell laptop which I had no major problems with at all. Now my newest laptop is all fixed and once again working good. So the one time I had a problem that I had to deal with their support, they resolved the issue quickly and effectively. Thanks Dell!

Somewhere around December 2006 I came up with the idea that I should create a website dedicated to the Annapolis Valley. For me and obviously many other people the first place you go when you are looking for information is the internet. When it came to looking up things about the Valley, they either could not be found, or the information was all over the place. So why not create a site that contains the information I was looking for.

Finally earlier this week I was able to take my inital version of the site live. The site is OurValley.ca. This is by no means the final version of the site because there are many more things that I would like to add. There are many more attractions that I need to add, and some smaller communities as well, but this is a good start.

Touring West Hants

As it is getting very close to school time for Alex and me, which means there are not going to be very many days left that we all have off, we took advantage of today and decided to take a tour of Hantsport and Windsor.

We started off by going to Blue Beach where we walked the beach checking out the many fossils that line the shore. The beach also has a great view of Cape Blomidon. There is also a museum there which has a large collection of neat fossils on display.

From there we headed into downtown Hantsport and took the kids to the playground to play around for a while. We were there once before during a Canada Day celebration and the kids enjoyed it then so we figured we would take them back. We played there for quite a while then headed into Windsor.

We had never been up to see Fort Edward before so we went up there to check out the old Blockhouse which is the only real thing remaining from the Fort. There is also a pretty good view of the Avon River from the Fort grounds. We also discovered a great picnic park right by the tourist bureau that we will have to use next time we are up that way. I'm looking forward to being done school and moving to Windsor I think it will be a great place to call home.

Last Weekend

Last weekend was a good family weekend. It started out by meeting up with some family friends in Lunenburg to go to the Fisherman's Museum. Before they suggested we meet there, neither Jen or I knew it existed even though we had been right beside it a year or two before walking along the Lunenburg waterfront.

Seeing that we did not know it existed we didn't have great expectations of what it would include, but it was really a pretty good museum. All the kids enjoyed themselves looking at all the old fishing vessels, and gear. The museum has two actual ships that you are able to board and walk through as part of the tour. The girls favorite part would probably be when Alex and Caile were able to help participate in a reinacting of a schooner launch.

After we left Lunenburg we headed back down to our new favorite beach. This time when we were getting ready to leave the car and walk down to the beach the kids told me to make sure I had my keys this time hahaha. As it turns out I remembered the keys, but when we got down to the beach and started unpacking our gear, Jen went to put the sunscreen on the girls but it wasn't in the bag. I specifically remembered taking it out of one bag in the trunk and putting it into the bad we were taking down to the sand, but it wasn't there. So back up the car I went. Sure enough, there it was, sitting right on the trunk of the car where I must have left it.

We stayed and played for quite a long time on the beach. Then when we were walking back down the beach towards the car, who was walking towards us, Tiff and Dave. So we put back down our things and stayed for a bit longer. Tiff and I ended up taking a long walk to the very end of the third beach and back, it was quite nice.

Two Months Later

Obviously the summer months have made me slack in updating this site, and if it wasn't for Jen reminding me last night I probably wouldn't be writing this right now. She has been keeping up her part by updating our photo album, so I guess I'm just slack.

As you can see if you have checked out the pictures we have kept fairly busy for most of the summer. There is way too much to write about in one post so I'm just going to start at last weekend. For everything else the pictures will have to speak for themselves :-)

So, last weekend was probably one of the most enjoyable of the summer for me. Saturday right after lunch we left and started down towards the Yarmouth end of the province. Jen's Great Aunt Claire who Ella received her middle name from was visiting from New Hampshire and we hadn't seen Jen's Grand parents on her Fathers side for some time. We wanted to make a weekend out of it so we could also visit friends and be able to break up the drive for the kids.

For our first stop we went to the National Historic site of Port-Royal where they have recreated the Habitation. It was quite interesting to walk through the building as see sort of what it would have been like for some of Canada's first European settlers. The girls liked going through as well and playing with some of the old tools, and trying on the wooden shoes that would have been worn.

From there we headed to the Mavillette beach in the Acadian region of Clare. It wasn't the warmest when we got there and the tide was way out, but we all had fun walking through the sand while the girls collected sea shells. It seemed like a very nice beach and on a warmer day it would be nice to go back and have a swim.

After leaving the beach we continued on to Port Maitland where we stayed the night visiting with the Parker family. It was our first time meeting their new baby boy. Our girls just love babies so they had a great time trying to entertain him. We don't get to see Jenn and Nathan very often but it is always great when we do. Hopefully we will make it back down that way more often. We stayed for lunch the next day and then started to head over to Pubnico to visit with our family. It was a short visit as the kids were starting antsy from sitting in the car and then sitting around the house, but it was a good visit.

We then made our way up the other shore heading towards Bridgewater where we were going to eat supper. On the way we stopped off at another beach. We had heard many good things about it but have never had a chance to get there. Everything we heard was right. Out of all the beaches I've been too in Nova Scotia this is about the nicest. The white sand and the clear water made it just beautiful. We ended up spending more time that we intended to because it was so nice, but also because when we got back to the car we realized that neither Jen or I had our keys.

Jen purposely left her's locked in the trunk so she didn't have to carry her purse. But someone, and just who it was is still up for debate at our house, left my keys sitting at the bottom of the trunk as well. So lucky us the only two sets of keys for our car are locked in the trunk with all the doors locked. The mosquitoes around the car were so thick as well, everyone was getting eaten alive. To avoid being one big bug bite, Jen and the girls went back down to the beach and were in the process of calling someone to come help us get into our car.

Jen had left her window down just a crack not nearly enough to fit an arm in, but I was lucky and found a stick the I managed to get in and unlock the door. Even more lucky one of the back seats was not fully latched and I was able to fold it down and get Jen's purse out of the trunk. After all that excitement everyone was getting quite hungry so we stopped in Liverpool and ate McDonalds instead of stopping in Bridgewater for something good hahaha.

All in all it was a great weekend maybe if we are lucky we will be able to fit in another weekend like that before I start back to classes, which is getting very close to happening :-/

Vacation: Day 7 - Last Day

Home again home again. After a long day of traveling we are finally at home. There were a few stressful moments on the trip back to the airport, but we made it.

Our goal was to leave the hotel by 10:00 am as we had about an hour an a half drive not including any waits at the border and our flight left at 1:15 pm. It was about 10:15 am so we were doing pretty good. But then about 5-10 minutes down the road I realized that I had left my backpack with our camera and my laptop in the hotel room! So we had to turn back around and ask to get back into the hotel room. I guess it is lucky that we weren't an hour away when I remembered, but it still was no fun.

The rest of the drive was pretty smooth until we turned off to go to the airport. We missed a turn and drove for about 5 minutes out of the way before realizing and turning back around and taking the right road. It is not cutting things pretty close as we still need to return the rental car and we were hoping to have something to eat before we boarded.

Lunch was interesting, we ended up having Tim Horton's muffins right before going through security. By the time we got some of the muffins into the girls, used the bathroom and made it through security we were some of the last people to board the plane. When we arrived at the boarding gate before we passed the agent our boarding passes she said, "You must be the McFadden Family." hahaha. As we had a car seat and booster seat with us for the girls to sit in we really should have been on with the pre-boarding. It was quite fun to squeeze down the isle without bumping people with the seats. But we managed and made it to our row with only moments to spare. The flight itself was quite good, there was a little more turbulence on the way home but nothing too bad. The weather was mostly clear so you could see earth below for most of the way.

We arrived back in Halifax right and got our luggage. It was decided that the best way to get the car would be for me to take the Park N Fly shuttle by myself and then drive it back. The whole process seemed to take forever, and I'm sure even longer than that for Jen who had to wait in the airport with two carts of luggage and three restless girls. We arrived near the very north end of the airport so that is where the family waited, but there is only parking at the south end. So I parked and ran down to get them and we all had to walk the length of the airport back to the car. After finally getting all settled it was about time for some supper. Swiss Chalet became our official last supper of the vacation.

Overall this vacation was very fun. The kids were very well behaved especially seeing as their usual schedule was completely off, two of them were not feeling well, and sleep was no where near the amount they usually get. We managed to see many excellent things and spent lots of time together as a family. Everyone seemed to have a good time and like every vacation we have taken Alex says she is going to live in the Niagara region lol.

Vacation: Day 6

The last full day of vacation, I have very mixed feelings about it. On one hand it will be very nice to sleep in my own bed, get the girls back on a schedule, and have a home cooked meal. But then you have to look at all the things that come a long with being back at home. You have to cook the home cooked meal, then clean up after it. You have to clean the rest of the house. Then there is the getting back to work aspect of being home. I guess this is why vacations are temporary things, they are great for a while, but you need to come back to reality. Maybe if it was possible to split your time more half and half it would be best. Couple weeks normal life, couple weeks vacation and so on.

Today was a very nice day. We started out by heading towards Buffalo, but had to make a stop first. The other day when we were at Kohls Jen and Alex had found some great sneakers for Alex, unfortunately they didn't have any her size. But Jen found another Kohls store just off our path to Buffalo so we stopped there and they did have Alex's size. She was very excited to get her Hannah Montana sneakers and free flip flops to go with them.

After the short stop we continued into the city and went to the science museum. We found our way there no problem at all which is always nice. Jen and I didn't find the museum itself to be all that great, but the girls seemed to have a good time which is all that matters.

Then it was time to leave the museum and that wasn't the most fun experience that we've had. Buffalo is a hard city to navigate through. We ended up in some pretty scary neighbourhoods with buildings all bordered up and stuff like that. Finally we got directions to the main downtown area, but ended up driving around that a number of times before getting directions again, and a map. After we got our bellies full everyone was in much better spirits.

While in Buffalo we wanted to do three things, go to the science museum, check. See some of the sights in the city, check. And go down and check out their water front on Lake Erie, ummm not checked. There seems to be only one road that will take you down to the water front and we simply could not find it. Being at the hotel now, and having the benefit of google map/satellite it is clear how we should get there, but while we were actually driving and using a hand held map we had no luck. So we parked the car and walked around the main downtown part of the city. There are a number of cool buildings there so it was quite interesting.

Later on after a rest at the hotel and waiting out a down pouring of rain we headed back in for supper and to do a little more shopping. I was able to eat at my favorite restaurant tonight, Olive Garden. It was our most expensive meal of the trip, but as far as I'm concerned it was worth it. After supper Jen finally got to go to her shopping paradise, Old Navy. Tell me who got the better end of this deal, she went shopping in Old Navy by herself, while I took the three girls into Toys R Us to pick out a toy each. They were actually very good and of course Jen picked out some nice things for me from Old Navy as well.

Well I guess I should get a good night sleep so we can get a good start on tomorrow and not miss our plane.

Vacation: Day 5

Wow finally getting to write a blog entry before 10:00 pm, this is a first for this vacation. Today was another very fun day. We didn't do much in the way of activities today, but the girls were on some of their best behaviour for the most part, so the things we did do were all the more enjoyable.

This morning we took our time gathering, organizing, and packing up our things and just got everything into the car for our 11:00 am check out time. From the hotel we crossed the border into New York State. Jen was very happy to finally set foot on American soil for this vacation lol. The hotel we are staying in now is only about 25 minute away from the previous hotel, not including border wait time which was not bad today. Even though we could not check into the new hotel until 3:00 pm we still headed in its direction. Caile had told us she wanted a grilled cheese sandwich from McDonalds for lunch so that is where we headed. Right across the street from the restaurant was a Kohls store which is one of Jen's favorites. Needless to say we headed over there to allow Jen to get some of her first shopping done for this trip. Of course everyone including myself benefits with new clothing.

After lunch and shopping we cam to the hotel to check in and let Ella have a bit of a nap. While she was napping we looked around online to see what was close by to eat and how to get down to the falls. We found an Applebees on the way to the falls so that is where we stopped to eat. They were quite busy and we actually had to wait for a table, just a short time thankfully. The food, I think, was some of the best we had on this vacation. One night while we were on the Canada side we were going to go to Applebees to eat but it was very expensive. We compared menus for a few different Applebees on either side of the border and on a lot of items there is an $8 difference in price.

We finally made it down to the falls and found parking. We then rushed around and found where to buy our tickets and took our ride on the Maid of the Mist. This is certainly the best way to see the falls. Everyone wearing their blue plastic rain covers we were very close to the falls. Jen ended up being tired of trying to keep her hood on so she ended up with pretty wet hair at the end. Ella absolutely loved the whole ride. She didn't mind getting wet and just smiled so much the whole ride.

Now after experiencing both sides of Niagara Falls I would have to say that Canada's side has a better view of the falls themselves. You can see the both sets of falls from the shore very easily. The American side however has down a great job with developing their side. You are able to get down very close to the edge of the falls. They also have a great observation tower built which gives you a great view of the falls.

It was pretty interesting after we had finished our trip on the boat we were taking some pictures at the top of the observation tower. A complete stranger came up and asked if she could have her picture taken with our baby (Ella) because she is so beautiful. We were standing right there so we thought why not. Ella didn't want to at first, but after Alex started posing her and Caile both got in right away. It turned into quite the photo shot with the whole group of people taking turns getting their pictures taken with our three girls in front of the falls. It was a very bizarre situation, and after the whole photo shoot Ella didn't want to have her picture taken anymore so I didn't get to have my picture taken with her in front of the falls.

Like most of these tourist destinations they are very smart with setting up their exits. In order to get off the observation tower you have to go through their gift shop. So of course we ended up with some keep sakes for the girls from this spot as well. Ella had gotten a blow up dolphin from Marineland so that she can bring it into Grammy's pool this summer, so Alex got a blow up Maid of the Mist boat so she can bring it with her. Caile, like most other spots we picked up souvenirs, got a stuffed animal and is sleeping with it right now. Ella got a soccer ball which she obviously can't sleep with, so Caile let her sleep with her stuffed frog she chose from the Bird Kingdom we visited.

Tomorrow is going to be our last real day of vacation so it will hopefully be a good one. There will certainly be more shopping involved but we will be doing things the rest of us enjoy as well ;-)

Vacation: Day 4

In my opinion day 4 was the best day yet of this vacation. Ella is feeling much better and therefore more cheerful which makes a world of difference.

So we got up this morning and headed to the African Lion Safari, just outside Cambridge. I think this was everyone's favorite attraction that we have seen. Very shortly after we arrived they had the Elephant bath time where a bunch of the huge animals come down into the pond and have a bath. When they were walking towards the pond they were all trunk to tail so with a little baby in the middle, pretty cute. When they got to the edge of the water the trainers basically let them go. You could tell they enjoy this part of the day because they literally took off running out into the water.

After watching bath time we thought we might be in for a little trouble as it started to rain a bit. So after a long debate about whether we should take the rental car through the safari or take the tour bus we took the car. Everyone else wanted to take the car but I was a little hesitant. When we had arrived and parked the car, two vehicles pulled in behind us which had just drove through the reserve. One woman was talking about how the hood ornament on her car was now missing along with some rubber, and a man with foot prints all over his car scoped a pile of poop of his hood. All I was thinking was how picky these rental car companies are. Marking down every single little scratch on the car and make you pay for it if there is a new one when you return. But in the end we did take our car. We could have also by-passed the monkey section of the drive but we figured we would drive through and risk it anyway. Very glad we did, those primates were some of the most interesting and fun creatures to watch. Luckily we seemed to be the only car that didn't have a single monkey jump on it while going through, so not a scratch or foot print.

It was very neat being able to drive around all these animals without having anything in between you except you car. Some of the other more notable animals that we got to be up and close too were Giraffes and Rhinoceroses.

After we completed the driving portion we went into a whole other section where they had petting areas setup for some of the goats and little camels. They were also offering elephant rides so Jen, Alex, and Caile took got tickets and waited in line to take a ride. The whole time Ella and I were waiting for them she kept telling me it was now her turn. So when they were done we took our turn and went for a ride as well.

They next part of the day is where it started to go downhill a little especially for Jen. It was our plan to stop into St. Catherine's on our way back to the hotel so we could eat supper and do some shopping, as they had a large mall with both an Old Navy and a Children's Place store, which are Jen's favorite places to shop. So first we ate at Boston Pizza where Jen was not overly fond of her meal. Then when were done we headed across the parking lot to the mall, but being a Saturday night and after six everything was now closed :-( Although this was very disappointing it was nice for me to see that it wasn't only rural Annapolis Valley Nova Scotia that closes it's malls at six on one of the days where most people have more time to go shopping than during they do during the week.

Once we got back to the hotel and got settled a little we decided since we had been in Niagara Falls for a few days now, it would be a good time to go walk down in front of the falls. These two waterfalls are amazing pieces of nature. We were going to stay down until the lit up the falls with different colored lights, but that would have been too late for our sleepy girls, and I was parked in a no parking zone.

Tomorrow we are packing up this hotel room and heading across the border to stay in a different hotel room for the last couple of nights on this vacation. The plan so far is to finally do some shopping for Jen and spend some more time around the falls themselves.

Vacation: Day 3

When we look back over this vacation I think we will see day 3 as the turning point. Not that days 1 and 2 were awful but they did have their moments. Now today wasn't completely incident free but what would a vacation be without a few little hiccups to keep things interesting.

First thing in the morning we had a feeling that Ella was getting back to her old self and feeling better. Sure enough as the day went on her appetite was back and she was in much better spirits. The down side is that Caile is now not feeling great and has the same cold Ella had. The good thing is that even when Caile is not feeling good she is more mature about it then Ella is and doesn't go into crying fits. The bad thing is, as I mentioned yesterday, when she gets coughing she gets herself very worked up and can cause herself to throw up.

We started today by heading to the Bird Kingdom which is the largest indoor free flying bird aviary in the world. It was great timing as they were celebrating their 5th anniversary this weekend and because of that they had admission on for just $5/ person. Ella and Caile are free to a lot of these things, so be basically go to go check out all the tropical birds for under the price of a normal adult admission. We realized from yesterday that things would be much smoother with kids who are not overtired so we decided after we got something to eat we would come home for a nap. Lunch ended up being cut short for the same reason supper was the night before so naps came sooner than we expected.

While Jen was putting Caile and Ella down for a nap, Alex and I decided to go for just a little walk around the hotel. Just down the street they have a big store called Souvenir City. While we were in looking around Alex spotted a dolphin shaped mood ring. She liked this from seeing the dolphins the day before at Marine Land. When we got back and the girls we asleep Jen wanted to go for a walk too, so her and Alex went out again.

Alex was so excited about her mood ring that Caile just had to have one too. So we went back with everyone together this time. Ella picked out a necklace and a bracelet set, and Caile picked out a butterfly shaped mood ring because we were on our way to the Butterfly Conservatory. I got mixed up and thought the Conservatory was in one direction when really it was the other, so we ended up on a bit of a run around before getting directions. We were scared because we thought it closed at 6:00 pm and it was getting closer and closer to that time so we thought we might not make it in. But when we got there they told use they actually didn't close until 7:00 pm so we had lots of time. We also took a quick trip through some of the botanical gardens which share the same property as the Butterflies.

After this we decided that we weren't going to chance another incident at a restaurant so I picked up some Subway for everyone and we ate in the hotel room. Caile actually ate a little of her wrap and some cheese and crackers and kept it all down so that is a good sign. Ella's appetite is back and she ate really good.

Two nights a week they put on a fireworks display over the falls so we decided to stay up for that tonight. Caile fell asleep in the car but the rest of us got to see them while sitting in a line up of traffic on the main road. When we got back to our room we realized that both door keys were inside the room so I had to run down and get an extra to get in. This while Caile was almost asleep in Jen's arms and Ella was getting very tired herself. But we got back in and got everyone settled down for the night. Tomorrow we will head in to the African Lion Safari, and should get to see all sorts of cool animals.

Vacation: Day 2

Being in a hotel room is pretty boring, especially when there are three kids sleeping and you have to try not to wake them up. It does however give me a good chance to write in this blog each night.

Last night didn't quite go as hoped. Alex and Ella were about the only ones who got good night sleeps. The rest of us were awake off an on all night long. I guess that is to be expected, there are five of us sharing two beds in a strange room.Hopefully tonight sleep will be a little better because tired kids do not make the funnest vacation companions.

All in all today was a pretty good day. Marine Land was great fun. The tricks and shows that these creatures can learn and put on is really amazing. I think about everyone's favorites were the dolphins. They can just jump so high out of the water and spin and flip at the same time. We spent most of the day walking around checking out all the displays and shows. We only took a couple of rides near the end but the kids enjoyed them. Jen wanted to go on the Sky Screamer but didn't want to alone, and even if we had someone to watch the kids I wouldn't have gone on with her I don't imagine.

We got back to the hotel room and before supper let Ella and Caile have much needed naps. We decided to have Swiss Chalet for supper. Everyone was pretty good there, but Caile wasn't very hungry. The next thing I knew she was throwing up on herself. She got coughing and when she does she gets herself pretty worked up. We don't think it is the flu or anything like that but she is probably coming down with the same cold that Ella has.

Our plans were originally to head into Toronto tomorrow to go check out centerville island for the kids, but we changed our plans after seeing so many cool things to do here. And it's not like we can leave Niagara Falls without getting out to look at the falls which we didn't get to do today. Hopefully tomorrow people will be feeling a little better, a lot more rested and we will have a smoother day where we can go check out the huge falls.

Vacation: Day 1

Well I'm just about to turn in for the night but I thought I'd better write some of today's events while they are still fresh in my head.

The first day of a vacation always seems like the hardest and this time seems to be no exception. Ella was not cooperating this morning when we were getting ready to leave. She is still not feeling the best so she is cranky and not herself because of it. We finally got away right around 1:00 which is when we planned. We had a stop in the city to make before catching our 4:45 flight. We made it to Windsor and realized that we left some important things behind. We had gift certificates for our car rental and our passes to get into the African Lion Safari. We figured the amount of money we would save by having these thing outweighed the lost time in turning around. Luckily we had Jen's Mom go to our place find the things we needed and she started driving to meet us, so that saved us some of our lost time. We no longer had time to make our stop so straight to the airport.

When we got there I dropped everyone off with the luggage and took went to take our car to the long term parking. When I was headed back to the car it had started down pouring. So in my minute long run to the car I got completely soaked. We had to dig through our bags and find me a change of clothes so I didn't spend the whole flight soaked.

The flight itself was ok, but after the long car drive and then the long flight the kids were getting pretty restless and unhappy by the end, especially Ella. She ended up crying for the last 10-15 min of the flight flat out. I'm sure we had a lot of angry neighbours on the plane hahaha.

But we all arrived in one piece and got the rental car. I ended up cutting someone off trying to cross a couple lanes so we could get into McDonalds. He wasn't too happy and let me know, ooops.

When we finally arrived at our hotel it was way past bedtime for the girls so they were fed up. Caile was specifically asking for a nice comfy bed to sleep in. As we were getting them ready for bed we realized that there wasn't a fridge and microwave in the room as we thought there was. We like to at least be able to eat breakfast at the hotel with the mini boxes of cereal so we can all eat that. Save at least a little money on food. Sure enough we were mistaken this hotel does not even offer this as a service. The staff here seem very nice though and offered to keep Ella's medication in the staff fridge for us. Instead I had him draw me a map to Walmart where I got a cooler so we could keep some milk, juice and Ella's medication in it. I ended up having a decent tour of Niagara Falls after a couple wrong turns but made it back with everything we needed.

Vacation Starts Tomorrow

Well the time is finally here. We are flying to Ontario tomorrow afternoon. We are busy packing stuff up tonight and getting all the last minute things ready to go away. Keep hoping that we will not forget anything, but I'm sure once we get there we will find something missing.

Lots of sights to see, and places for the kids to have a good time. I'm certain that we will stay busy for the duration of the trip.

Ella is still not feeling herself so we are hoping that nobody else catches this will we are gone. It could make for a painrful vacation for everyone.

Hopefully each night I will make a post talking about how we spent our day but we will see, I might end up being to warn out to even type LOL.

Annapolis Royal Visit

Yesterday we travelled down to Annapolis Royal and had a very nice day. We woke up in the morning and Ella wasn't feeling all the best. She has an ear infection and a cold to go along with it so she was a little cranky. We talked it over for a while and debated whether or not we should go and as we did she seemed to perk up a bit. So after lunch we quickly packed some things and headed out.

There were a couple of places that we wanted to visit down that way and headed first to the Historic Gardens. It was a great day and time of year to visit the Gardens.. There were so many of the flowers in bloom. Caile wanted to have her picture taken about every couple of feet, even if there were no flowers around. Near the end Ella was starting to get cranky again. Her nose started running quite a bit but she still loved looking at the flowers. Even though she loved them we still ended up having to leave before seeing everything there so we will have to go back again someday.

Leaving the Historic Gardens we headed to the wildlife park at Upper Clements Park. It wasn't fully open yet, the admission office was closed and there were a few animals missing, but we were able to go through and see most of the animals. It ended up being kind of interesting because when I got in the car to leave the Historic Gardens I broke a strap on my sandles, so the whole walk around the park it was like I was wearing one flip flop. It was a hurried trip because of Ella of course and we were getting close to closing time.

Annapolis Royal is a great spot for a day trip, with our visit cut short and not being able to see places like Port Royal we will certainly be heading back sometime this summer.

Well Jen's birthday was a very busy day, but it was a fun time. It started out a little rough, we were supposedly trying to let Jen sleep in but it didn't work out so well. We did manage to make a nice pancake breakfast for her though.

After lunch we headed into Acadia to watch Max and Ruby. The kids had a good time there, and the show ended up being better than I had imagined. They performed a couple stories from the TV show and had lots of songs with actions for the kids to join in with.

We went directly from the show into the city for a birthday party with the Fields family. We had a visit first before the party and then headed over to the theatre for the actual birthday. The kids had a great time playing and visiting. Right when we got to the Fields house they got dropped off a third rabbit. Alex carried it around for a long time and all the girls liked feeding the other bunnies as well.

Time for an Update

You would think that being done school for the summer would have given me more time to keep this blog updated. Seeing as I haven't made a post in about a month I figure it is about time to write at least a little something.

We have been quite busy running around doing things and going places. You can see at least part of our adventures in our photo gallery. We have been making good use of our season pass to Oaklawn Farm Zoo, which is one of the kids favorite things to do.

One day we made our way to Grand Pre and had a nice day making our way through the visitors centre area and the Historic Church property. There was a mix up of days which made us a day early before the real opening for the season but the main grounds are open year so we were still able to check everything out. The Church grounds there are beautiful, and a great place to take pictures.

Last weekend was the annual Apple Blossom Festival Although we didn't attend most of the celebrations this year we did go see the childrens parade. A lot of the activities I find are just so busy and with so many people we decided to do our own things. Alex, Caile and Ella all really like the parade so we try to at least make it to that every year. Grandpa Doug was going to ride his unicycle in the Grand Street Parade this year, so we were going to go watch that to see him, but a couple days before the event he ended up dislocating his shoulder. Hopefully next year we will get to see him riding with the rest of the parade entries.

Jen's birthday is in a couple of days, but because our day will be so busy on her actual birthday we will be having a little family celebration today. On her birthday we will be going to see a live Max and Ruby show at Acadia. I can't wait to see especially Ella's face when she gets to see them up running around the stage. She loves Max and Ruby. Then after the show is over we are basically heading right into the city to take the kids to a birthday party for family friends.

Noggins Farm Nature Trail

Yesterday Jen was not feeling well, so when Ella went down for her afternoon nap Caile and I went to get some groceries. We managed to get a little sidetracked though. Recently I had read that at Noggins Corner Farm there was a Bald Eagles nest with some new born eaglets. The wonderfully friendly staff in the Farm Market gave us one of their walking trail maps and pointed out exactly where the nest could be found on the walk. This was my first time going down the trail and although we didn't go very far the path seemed to be very well kept.
When we first made it to where an Eagle was in sight another friendly staff member who was out doing maintenance on the trail stopped and talked to us. He explained the best way to get go to ensure we got a good picture of the nest and Eagles.
We did not get to see any of the eaglets, but we did manage to see one of the parents sitting out in plain site and then on our way out went soaring away. Although I didn't notice it while looking at the nest when we arrived home and were examining the pictures we could see there was another of the parents heads just barely sticking out of their huge home.
Noggins' website has a web cam setup pointed at the nest and other information about all the other things they have to offer www.nogginsfarm.ca.

Last night we got to go to Alex's Spring Concert at school. Before hand Alex was very excited to go, when she got home from school she right away wanted to go and get changed into her concert cloths, even though it didn't start until 6:30 pm. For a couple weeks Alex had been practicing her songs at night time and she did very well singing away in front of everyone with her class.

The theme for their concert was "Assignment Earth - What kids can do to save the planet". The school celebrated 1000 projects over 16 years that involved helping to save the earth. Pretty impressive as they started long before going green was promoted in the main stream media.

When we got home last night Alex was still singing one of her songs called "Driving Miss Daisy", it was pretty cute.

School's Out

It has been a rough semester but I now have four months to prepare for the next one. Overall the year ended better than I imagined. For a while I felt very confident that I would have to repeat at least one course. Fortunately that was not the case, I managed to squeak through a couple of rough ones. I was never in danger of actually failing a course, but for required courses a grade of C- or greater is needed to count towards a degree.

With all said and done this year I finished with a GPA of 3.0 and combined with last year it stands at 3.26 which is equal to a grade of B. If circumstances were different I'm certain I could have done better, but with the lack of time outside of the classroom that I can dedicate to school I am more than satisfied with these marks.

Now that I am done for the summer I'm looking for some work. So if anyone out there is in need of any website work please get in contact with me. In general I would not be able to work any sort of dedicated shift, but if your project can be a work from home at my own pace I would be a good match. If by chance the pay was enough and it was a job that would take up my whole break than we may be able to work something out. You can see my general resume at www.SandyMcFadden.com and examples of websites I have created at www.smcdesigns.ca.

Toys R Us Loves Us

First off it's been a while since I've written an update. It's exam time so I've been very busy studying as often as I can so I can hopefully be prepared. I've finished 4 out of 5 so far and there was only one that I am not confident in. Unfortunately that one is the lone computer course I was taking this term.

Since my last update we've kept busy with other things besides studying. I last posted a little before Easter, so I'll start there. We had a good Easter, the Easter Bunny brought lots of chocolately treats and some other goodies as well. Easter was about the same time we went on our online Toys R Us shopping spree. They do have some pretty good deals every once in a while. For Ella we ordered two Little People play sets, Caile got a Barbie Mariposa Fairy, and Alex got a Bratz scooter.

The Oaklawn Farm Zoo opened up right around Easter and we have been there twice so far as well. With a trip to the city we played a little glow in the dark mini put at the Putting Edge. You can see pictures from most of these events at our Gallery.

Back to our Toys R Us love affair, we also recently ordered a wagon so that we can take the girls for long walks and them not get too tired out. Plus it's a good work out pulling a wagon with two kids in it behind you. After that order they showed is their love by sending us a 10% discount coupon on our next online purchase. So because Alex out grew her bike from last year, and Daddy got a new bike this year, we ordered her up a new one. She has been out driving around testing it out and says she loves it. She was sad when it was raining out this morning because she couldn't ride it to school. But after supper it had cleared up so Jen took them all out for a walk with Caile and Ella in the wagon and Alex on her bike. All this fun while I was at school writing a Sociology exam.

Busy Weekend

This has been a busy but fun weekend. It started Friday night. We took the kids to go see the Easter Bunny at Greenwood mall. Ella, like at Christmas time, still wasn't fond of going and sitting on a strange lap, so instead she sat on her big sisters lap and made out ok. I really like the Easter Bunny in Greenwood, I've seen pictures from other parents with their kids sitting on a scary looking bunny knee. Here's an extreme example lol.

Saturday, Alex and I went to her last skate lesson of the season. She thought it was going to be more of a fun day but they actually made her work. It took a bit of coaxing by the coaches to get her trying her hardest but what worked was them telling her if she didn't try hard they weren't going to give her the badge for completing level 4. That is all she needed so she tried hard and did complete all requirements for level 4. She was very excited.

Today I spent the majority of my morning going through the ridiculous process of registering Alex for swimming lessons. There has to be a better way than how they do it. But I went and waited from 10:30 until 1:00 and got her registered in the right level and at the time we wanted. Some people arrived a little after 8:00 to ensure they got their preference. Oh yeah I should mention that the doors weren't scheduled to open until 11:30 and the actual registration start at 12:30.

This afternoon we went over to my twin nieces first birthday party. It was a good time, all the kids had fun and I think the adults did to :-D

Alex's group did their routine to "Dancing in the Rain".
Ella is Two!!

Wow time really flies. Our youngest baby Ella is two today.

We had a great birthday party for her yesterday. Lots of family and some friends came over to celebrate with her. She was quite excited. She woke up from her nap to find the house decorated with balloons and streamers and just kept saying "wow!"

Ella was very happy with her Max and Ruby birthday cake. Dairy Queen did a great job decorating it for us even though when we called to order it they didn't know who Max and Ruby were. We took in a picture for them and it turned out very nice. Not like some of the scary ones we found online, example 1 and example 2.

Unlike Caile who gets very shy when everyone sings happy birthday to her, Ella was basking in all her attention. She blew her candle out once, but that wasn't good enough for her, so we lit it again for her hahaha.

The party went very smooth even though there were quite a few people in our place, and being smart this time and using disposable dishes make clean up go much quicker. We were in for a small fright when a neighbour knocked on the door saying he might have hit one of the cars that was parked on the side of the road. Luckily it must have been some ice he heard crunching because there didn't appear to be any damage.

The other funny thing was that when we were finally getting everyone ready for bed we went to look for Ella's new Dora tooth brush we bought her for her birthday, but it was no where to be found. We then realized that we forgot to bring out the gifts that Jen and I had bought her, so there were still all wrapped hiding in our closet. Oh well now she will have something to open on her actual birthday.

Happy Birthday Ella!

For sometime I've been meaning to pick up a pair of skates. So yesterday I found a great used pair and picked them up. I think they have only been used once and had never been sharpened. Now I have not been on a pair of skates for over 10 years and never was a very good skater. But today Alex and I went skating at the Acadia arena. Alex kept telling me that she was going to teach me to skate and she was worried other people were going to laugh at me hahaha.

Well it went better than I thought. I didn't fall once, came close a couple of times though. Even though I didn't fall I was still pretty shaky. Alex can certainly skate circles around me. She is a great skater and she loves to do it. It was great getting out and doing something just me and her. We go places a lot but usually it is just driving in the car not actually doing something.
Lately it seems that no matter how organized, or how well we plan out our days, there just is not enough time to complete everything I'd like to in the run of a day. I guess this is to be expected when trying to juggle the schedules we do. With me in school during the day and Jen working at night it allow us to meet all our top priority obligations, and always have one of us home with the kids. But it doesn't leave a lot time for school assignments and studying, let alone leisure or entertainment for Jen and I.

The lack of time has become all the more evident now that school work has started picking up again. There is also a new project that I am trying to work on, but at this point in time it falls low on the priority list so I won't elaborate on exactly what it is right now. It is something I really enjoy working on so it could be dangerous because I have a tendency to put off things like school work. This is especially true right now as the majority of the classes I'm taking this semester are either not interesting to me, or I'm having trouble grasping them, which is very frustrating. So needless to say it would be very easy for me to procrastinate the school work and do the more enjoyable tasks.
